Purina® Pro Plan® conducted a revolutionary nine-year study to understand the impact diet has on cats age 7 and older. Specifically, the goal of our study was to evaluate whether antioxidants — alone or in combination with other nutrients —increase health and longevity in older cats. Along the way, we tracked a range of health measures associated with cat aging and general overall health, including body weight, lean muscle mass and skin thickness.
Over a nine-year period, Purina® Pro Plan® studied 90 healthy, mixed breed cats between the ages of 7 and 17. These cats were split into 3 groups, and were assigned to one of three diets: a complete and balanced adult control diet, the control diet with added antioxidants, and the control diet with the proprietary blend found in Purina® Pro Plan® Prime Plus™.
Our research showed measurable improvements promoted by our proprietary blend of:
The results from our study were remarkable. In our study, body weight, lean muscle mass and skin thickness—all contributing factors to quality of life—decreased less in the cats in the Diet 3 group. In addition, cats that were fed a daily diet containing the proprietary blend (Diet 3) lived significantly longer than cats fed Diet 1.
In a 9-year study, cats exclusively fed a complete and balanced daily diet containing the proprietary blend found in Pro Plan® Prime Plus™ from age 7 and on lived longer. (Versus cats fed the complete and balanced diet alone.)
